iPhone native Apps - the great leap backwards?

advertisement

Seemingly putting me in a minority, one area I really wasn't particularly enthused about was that of native apps for the iPhone, and iPod Touch. To me it seemed a pretty pointless step right from the get go - especially after a minor iPhone OS update last year allowed developers to make icons for their web based apps that could be added to the home screen of an iPhone. In essence, web apps became native, first class apps on the iPhone.

But the clamor for a software development kit (SDK) was loud, and the rejoicing great, when Apple announced that native app development support was forthcoming...

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

The apps I have tried crash repeatedly, won't open, or require me to restart my iPhone to get them to work...sometimes all three. This platform seems quite unstable at the moment and there has been alot of conjecture on the web that Apple has delivered an ustable OS. Why is it then that none of Apple's iPhone apps exhibit this behavior?

What has worked well? Tetris.
